We, music journalist and bloggers of the world, tend to take for granted that musicians will be fine with whatever we write about them, as long as it’s good publicity. And that’s usually the case. But sometimes, somebody drubs us for our opinion on their music, because we mistake what we think they’re trying to communicate for the truth.
I have always used references to introduce new artists in the hope to help other music enthusiasts in discovering something great and in line with their own taste. For example, when I first listened to Ron Gallo, I thought he had the fascinating and profound wit of David Byrne and the maverick attitude of Ty Segall. But then again, this is my opinion, which is built on my personal listening sessions. Who is Ron Gallo, really? Does he like to be fitted in a box? Does he really need to be introduced as similar to David Byrne or Ty Segall? No, he doesn’t. He is already well known, with two albums to his credit and a long list of concerts in famous festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza and Firefly. And of course, he is able to introduce himself in the best way possible, even on a stressful day, after six hours in a van.
If you don’t know him, listen gingerly. And if you’re already familiar with his amazing mind, find out other reasons to love him.
